The Over-Engineered Door Desk On The Cheap Part 2

So I finally designed what the desk (that was once a door) will rest on.  Here is a preview via Google SketchUp.

Google SketchUp is great because it is free, and has a simple means to make and navigate models.  I have just hit the tip of the iceberg in terms of functionality.  There are wonderful models that people have developed online.

I hope to build the pedestals soon.  After the pedestals, I will make some doors.

The Over-Engineered Door-Desk On The Cheap

Problem: I wanted a big desk.  I didn't want to pay hundreds of dollars for it.
Solution: Build a Door-Desk!

Problem: I wanted to build a Door-Desk, but didn't want to pay for the door (~$50 for a solid core slab door).
Solution: I found a solid-core door set out for trash in the neighborhood!

The Door-Desk has begun!

I borrowed a circular saw (from my new father-in-law) to trim off the edges and make the corners nice.  I used some 3/4" pine (ripped to 2.5") for the front and sides.  I decided not to rip the pine for the back, keeping a little over the top for a backsplash.  The holes will work perfectly for cords, as I will attach two surge protectors on the underside of the desk.

Here are pictures of the work in progress.  I was somewhere in between covering up the nail holes and sanding everything down:

Next is priming and painting.  Oh, and finding what the bottom of the desk will be like.  I want it to be nice.  Ideas include:

- Using two filing cabinets.  But that means I have to buy something!  Eeewww...
- Building my own boxes.  Cheap, but it may take a while to build something that looks good.

Any suggestions?

Year's Worth of Planning = One Wonderful Day

To explain why I have not blogged in so long, I only have to say that I was preparing for a wedding.  Anyone who has gone through such an activity will understand.  In September, we got hitched, after 12 years of dating.  It was the best day of my life, and it went by all too fast.

My Table Project: Done!

Hey, the table was done a few months ago.  Here is a photo.  I must say I am pretty proud of the end product.  However, I will need to make better wood choices, patch imperfections in the wood, and look into using a less glossy polyeurathane.  Pardon the lighting, after all the table is black...

I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll...

During the Independence Day weekend, my future parents-in-law treked up to Rockport to look for a ketubah.  My future father-in-law had been raving for years about the Paper House.  Years.  Well, I finally got to behold the splendor that is, The Paper House.
